The Students of Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University won the first and second prize in the international competition for innovative urban agriculture in Italy 2020 sponsered by The United Bank

       Sponsored by The United Bank and under the slogan "Get Green", Cairo University students, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture won the first prize and the second prize in the international innovative competition for urban agriculture in cities (Urban Farm 2020), which held the final of the competition at the Novella Farm exhibition in Italy from 19-20 last February.

Where the Egyptian team, Yasmina Mohamed Ragab Abdel-Razek, Sherifa Khaled Ibrahim Yassin Al-Hajjan and Muhammad Ahmed Muhammed Ahmed Shahwan, won the first place in designing and developing an abandoned chemical factory in Galliera, near the city of Bologna, in addition to the first prize for the international innovative competition for urban agriculture in cities.

The second prize for the competition was awarded to Maryam Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed Shehata, Salma Adel Shoukry Hammam Abu Ghonaima, Sohaila Ismail Ali Tantawi, Maryam Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Hussein Alyan, and Nada Yahya Zakaria Ibrahim on their design and the development of the abandoned first-aid site Lanuvio in Rome Italy, as well as the first place, to transform these sites into smart, productive and sustainable buildings using innovative smart architectural and agricultural solutions that contribute to the growth of the city in achieving its economical, social, environmental and cultural sustainable development goals.

The Egyptian teams from Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Architectural Engineering won the second and fourth places for developing the site of the city of Galliera near the city of Bologna, and the second place for the developing of site Nybyen - the city of Longyearbyen, Norway.

The idea of ​​the competition revolves around creating smart, sustainable solutions to the current city problems, especially the increase in Urban population, which led to the redesign and re-establishment of food production centers to make cities more sustainable and to promote the creation of new job opportunities through new consistent economies with achieving sustainable development and developing education through Knowledge, And increasing the schools and universities students in Italy to these three developed sites (Galliera - Bologna, Lanuvio - Rome and the city of Nybyen - Longyearbyen, Norway) to increase awareness and learning by identifying the applications of smart systems and green urban agriculture in providing clean and safe food and finding new sources of income in the three cities in a sustainable and smart architecture using the latest technology and innovation.

Nevine Kashmiry - Deputy Managing Director of Business Sectors at The United Bank - says that The United Bank believes in the importance of the role of economic institutions in supporting researchers from the distinguished Egyptian youth to participate in international forums as well as supporting institutions of higher education. This comes from the Egyptian vision for sustainable development 2030,

Nevine Kashmiry added that banks, locally and globally, shows great interest in scientific research, due to its importance in sustainable development, and to support, qualify and build the capabilities of the young Egyptian researchers in universities and research centers, which contributes in to creating a cadre of societal, environmental standards and values. 

Hence the interest of The United Bank in sponsoring students participating in the international competition for urban agriculture in Italy, in which the youth of the Department of Architectural Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering - Cairo University participated. The competition was intense between 25 international student teams, comprising 139 student, representing 22 prestigious universities from 17 countries. Where their research projects were presented in the international competition for urban agriculture in Italy before the international jury, under the patronage of Prof. Dr. / Mohamed Othman El-Khasht, President of Cairo University and Prof. Dr. Hossam Abdel-Fattah Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering - Cairo University and with the support of Prof. Dr. Sherine Wahba , Deputy of the Faculty of Engineering for Education and Student Affairs - Cairo University Prof. Dr. / Salwa Abdel Hafeez, Deputy of the Faculty of Engineering for Graduate Studies and Research - Cairo University and supervision of Prof. Dr. Mohsen Mohamed Abu El Naga, Professor of Sustainable Environment and Smart Cities, Department of Architectural Engineering - Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University. 

About the international competition for urban agriculture in cities 2020

It is worth noting that the International Urban Agriculture Competition (Urban Farm 2020) is organized for the second year in a row by the University of Bologna and the Alma Mater Foundation FAM affiliated with the University of Bologna in cooperation with several prestigious European universities (University of Florence and the University of Napoli Federico II, Italy, University of Dortmund and University of Berlin, Germany). The main objective of Urban Farm is to design innovative urban farming systems that integrate the best architectural and technological innovations to produce clean food in urban environments. The competition also aims to foster interdisciplinary and international cooperation between universities all over the world. The competition also aims to enhance interdisciplinary international cooperation between universities all over the world. In the progress of the requirements of the first phase of the international competition during three months (November 2019 - January 2020), 25 teams of 139 student have applied for 25 projects from 22 prestigious universities representing 17 countries (America, Iceland, France, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Poland, Serbia, Pakistan, Turkey, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and Nigeria in addition to Egypt, which were represented by five student groups from Cairo University in the competition). Only 20 of them qualified for the second stage, and five Egyptian student groups from Cairo University participated in it (4 groups from the bachelor’s stage - the fourth year - Architectural Engineering ((2 sets of the semester program and 2 sets of the credit hours program)) and one group From postgraduate studies for master’s students) from December 10, 2019 to January 20, 2020. Then qualified for the final stage 15 projects from 15 international work teams, including 5 work teams for Egyptian students from the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University.

These projects were evaluated during the six consecutive phases of a scientific committee composed of 52 international professors from prestigious universities that included the University of Arizona in the United States and the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands, the University of Southwest Philia, the University of Leibniz - Hanover, the University of Humboldt Berlin - Germany, and the Research Institute for Agricultural Development - CIRAD, in France, as well as the University of Bologna, the University of Florence, the Second University of Naples Federico and the University of Rome La Sapienza, the Technical University of Milan and the University of Catania in Italy, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, ​​the University of Elmira in Spain, the University of Oslo in Norway, the University of Cape Peninsula, South Africa, in addition to Cairo University - Egypt represented by Prof. Mohsen Mohamed Abu el-Naga. 

Fifteen Egyptian students (five work teams) traveled to participate in the final competition to participate in the final of the international competition and to show their innovative projects in the final stage and winning prizes in Italy and submit their project proposals to the International Arbitration Committee in Italy with the support of Prof. Dr. / Mohamed Othman El-Khosht, President Cairo University, as well as Professor Dr. Hossam Abdel Fattah Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Dr. Sherine Wahba, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for Education and Student Affairs, and Professor / Salwa Abdel Hafeez, Vice Dean of the College of Engineering for Postgraduate Studies and Research, in addition Its full support to the scientific and academic supervision over the last four months of Prof. Dr. / Mohsen Mohamed Abu el-Naga, a professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University and a member of the Scientific Committee for the contest in Italy. The presence of the international jury is composed of five international experts and professors from prestigious universities that include: University of Dortmund, Germany, Kent University in the United Kingdom and University of Naples Federico II in Italy, the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain and Cairo University in Egypt.
