The United Bank sponsored the first Egyptian heritage- products show, to empower around 26 thousand women in 119 villages in Upper Egypt. The event was organized by El Nidaa and ENID “Egyptian Network for Integrated development”. That was in the frame work of The United Bank ’s strategy to empower the Egyptian woman socially and economically in different governorates, especially in Upper Egypt.

The big developmental event was under the auspices of HE Dr. Rania Al Mashat – Minister of International Cooperation. With the presence of UB team. The event was attended by an elite group of economists, business men and media figures. In addition to big socially and economically influencers, a group of civil society leaders.

The show has launched a new brand called Hoopoe developed by ENID/ EL Nidaa. That has significant scale in 119 villages across 5 governorates in Upper Egypt: Qena, Luxor, El Minya, Sohag, and Fayoum. And have benefited around 26 thousand persons.

The event included the first fashion show for the new brand Hoopoe, with around 30 designs. It also included handicrafts exhibition demonstrating the skills of ENID/ EL Nidaa workshops beneficiaries. The purpose is to demonstrate the outcome of eleven years of successful interventions in design, training and marketing of products, all along with the utmost attention to the principles of fair trade.

Designing blossoms:

The first collection of Hoopoe is inspired by the Ancient Egyptian motifs and Art Deco design. The star element is the lotus flower, that spread open and close across day and night at the sense of light.

Developmental Purposes:

Through the launching of Hoopoe brand, El Nidaa hopes to create a profitable brand which can support the continuation and expansion of El Nidaa handicrafts workshops in Upper Egypt. Thus contributing to the socio- economic empowerment and poverty alleviation for women and youth in Upper Egypt.

Ashraf El Kady commented on this event, stating that the handicrafts sector comes as the second biggest economic sector after the agricultural sector, as for the number of workers. He added that Egypt is the first in the middle east in the field of handicrafts. That contributed to create a valuable heritage and a distinctive Egyptian cultural identity, different from other cultures in the region.

Ashraf El Kady pointed out the efforts done by civil society entities for sustainable development in different governorates, especially El Nidaa/ ENID are regarded as a huge achievement. And Hoopoe launching records an 11 years of hard work that serves the society on artistic, cultural and trade levels. It also contributes to providing artistic and handicrafts lovers to get these products with competitive prices. He added that Egypt is known for copperware, loom and handmade carpets. Egypt enjoys having a large number of artistic professionals in this field, and their production conquers the local and foreign market.

Efforts by the state, CBE, and UB to revive the Egyptian cultural identity.
Ashraf El Kady stated that the Egyptian state, The Central Bank of Egypt, and civil society institutions adopt this promising sector through the MSME. In addition to the handicrafts sector information bank. Moreover, the contact with the concerned authorities to provide a consultancy free service for workers, and the financial institutions and banks provide finance. As well as, developing their administrative skills with workshops to prepare feasibility studies and also developing marketing skills.

Connecting the technical education with the labor market requirements

El Kady pointed to the state’s policy to the importance of connecting the technical education with the labor market requirements. The thing that paves the way to the handicrafts sector to develop and maximize its role in the national economy, and reduce the unemployment rates.

The advantages of micro funded projects

The micro funded project doesn’t need big capital or a sophisticated or high quality infrastructure. And also its production requirements are simple. It depends on the self-skills and individual abilities in the first place. Moreover, this kind of projects contributes to boosting women, youth and handicapped work. So, achieving financial inclusion and developing national economy.

UB banking and technical solutions for micro funded projects

UB provides a package of micro finance solutions, that are suitable for this sector and are made to maximize the performance of trade, industrial, or service or handicrafts fields, with simple procedures. The client can get the fund- needed Through a network of 68 branches covering the Republic.

These interventions have benefited 25,828 women, men and youth. ENID/El Nidaa looks forward to continuing this journey together to help improve the wellbeing of women and youth in Upper Egypt.
