The United Bank announces the implementation of 17 initiatives to empower Egyptian women economically, socially and culturally for more than 29 thousand women

Cairo: 7th of March, 2023

On the occasion of celebrating The International Women’s Day, and in the framework of The United Bank strategy regarding social and economic Egyptian women empowerment in different governorates in Egypt, especially in the golden triangle governorates. Ashraf El Kady-  Chairman of UB, announced the implementation of 17 initiatives to economically, socially and culturally empower more than 29 thousand women, based on 4 strategic axes:

  • Enhancing the women’s culture on corporate leadership level and highlighting the effective and inspiring role by women in maximizing the productivity and supporting the intellectual innovation.
  • Launching and implementing many sustainable development programs to provide training for women, qualifying her to productivity. In addition to reaffirm the policy of connecting education and technical training with work market requirements.
  • Encouraging women efficiency to effectively communicate through Laky cultural forum, in order to bridge continual communication channels, and exchange experiences, and enhance Egyptian women achievements on various levels.
  • Economic and social women empowerment through developing their productive skills, maximizing finance opportunities, technical consultancies and technical services provided by UB.

El Kady mentioned the efforts exerted by UB in the women empowerment field, which resulted in 17 initiatives, that benefit more than 29 thousand women on the republic level. These initiatives:

First: UB Economic empowerment initiatives- UB provides a package of innovative solutions to help SMEs and micro finance sector to grow, including funding solutions as per The Central Bank of Egypt terms and conditions of the initiative. As well as, the funding solutions supported by digital services, such as: quick microfinance through UB wallet, and the availability of pay loan installments through UB wallet. That’s in order to accomplish economic empowerment of women and eliminate many social problems: unemployment, crime and corruption...etc. As well as, its effective role in merging formal and informal economy, improving the citizen’s life, and achieving financial inclusion. UB efforts resulted in:

  • Financing 250 SMEMs around the republic with 15% of the finance volume portfolio dedicated to SMEMs sector in UB.
  • Providing a package of technical and banking consultancies in order to support entrepreneurship and start-ups to almost 25% of the projects of Nile Pioneers initiative affiliated to CBE. Through three centers of UB Nile Pioneers in Cairo, Dakhahlia, and El Menia.
  • Launching Laky package for consultancy and banking solutions for Egyptian ladies with distinctive returns and big benefits. As well as, a package of special digital banking solutions, under the name of “Your Bank Online”, which works 24/7. They are: Mobile Banking, Internet Banking, UB digital wallet, and ATMs. All with the purpose of saving ladies’ time and effort.
  • Banking solutions to expand the financial inclusion base. Through a package of banking services that encourage ladies to deal with the banking system. A financial inclusion account has been issued. That enables youth starting from 16 years old to open their own bank accounts.

UB spreads financial culture among residential communities in a number of governorates, and also among students from governmental and non-governmental universities. The thing that accomplish the state’s target and CBE as for expanding the financial inclusion base, improving the citizen’s life style, reducing unemployment rate and inflation, and eliminate internal emigration. In addition to providing job opportunities, developing health and educational services, and women empowerment. That’s through issuing a number of distinctive banking products: micro finance, Ajyal – Youth card, Laky the card specialized for women. As well as pre- paid cards, Meeza national cards, and the Millionaire certificates that made dreams of many winners come true.

Second: UB Social Initiatives

  • Zakat for debtors- this campaign aimed to release 2000 female debtors before Mother’s Day. By paying all their debts and finishing all their release procedures to return them back to their families, that was with the cooperation of The Egyptian Ministry of Interior and Misr El Kheir foundation, under the sponsorship of Mr. President.
  • Khorshed village: UB has distributed 50 cattle to women in khorshed village, in addition to a monthly amount of money as food allowance to these cattle. As well as, establishing 5 kiosks for women there.
  • Community development to operate 350 families in Saint Catherine- Under the slogan of “Tagaleaat” inherited by generations. With the cooperation of General Khaled Foda -South Sinai governor, and General Talaat El Anany- Saint Catherine mayor.

This project aims to enhance entrepreneurship, improve the competitiveness and productivity abilities to Saint Catherine’s residents’ projects, whether in agricultural, rural, and food development, or handicraft that are well known done by Saint Catherine, such as: mountain honey extraction, olive oil industry, natural herb cultivation, almond farming, soap manufacturing, and Sinai handicrafts. UB has established greenhouses project, and made competitions to encourage these greenhouses owners to work and produce more, and improve their products quality, such as: the best handicraft competition, the best farm and fruitful trees, the best honey bee hive, the best medicinal and aromatic plant, the best rural developed farm, the best greenhouse.

  • Organizing “Sinawy” exhibition in Sharm El Sheikh for handicrafts- on the margins of The Holy Quran Competition, UB established an exhibition for residents of Saint Catherine, Mousa mountain and the valleys around. As well as, their products have been exhibited in UB monthly carnival.
  • Supporting collective wedding for 25 orphan girl in South Sinai governorate.
  • Sponsorship of “Torathna” exhibition- under the sponsorship of Social Solidarity Ministry and Ministry of Trade and Industry. UB exhibited through its booth in the exhibition the nomadic Badawi handicrafts.
  • Workshops for Sinai women to qualify them- on the margins of “Torathna” exhibition, UB organized a range of lectures and workshops to support the Sinai woman and provide them with the know how to market for their products and how to use digital technology in sell and purchase.
  • Baheya Hospital- UB has provided support to 260 breast cancer affected lady, including surgeries and after surgery medications, either chemotherapy or radiotherapy. As well as, purchasing medical equipment for Baheya El Sheikh Zayed. Recently, UB has signed a cooperation protocol with Baheya Foundation to ensure the continuity of support provided to the hospital.
  • Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt- UB provided support to 15 infected ladies.
  • Sponsoring Al Nedaa foundation and the Egyptian Initiative for Integrated Development to empower around 26 thousand women in 119 villages in Upper Egypt. Through launching the new brand of Hoopoo, which is adopted by Nedaa and the Egyptian Initiative for Integrated Development. Hoopoo included more than 30 designs of Egyptian heritage products and handicrafts.

Third: UB Cultural initiatives

The launching of UB Laky forum has a great impact in enhancing the communications channels presented to Egyptian woman culturally, socially, and professionally. That is through holding many activities and cultural rounds that support the main message of the forum which is investing in female powers, as a motive for innovation and productivity maximizing. In addition to hope industry as one of the cornerstones of enhancing the new state, for a better future for a better Egypt.  

The vision of Laky forum includes a belief in the importance of creating a supportive work environment that motives women in different roles, these roles played by women as a primary partner in the community development, either in professional level or in family and human relationships level.

Representing women in leadership positions and non- leadership positions in different levels is very strong and inspiring in UB. Women represent 30% of the UB work team. Which is positively reflected in the economic and social results of the corporate. That’s why Laky forum has organized a range of workshops to develop the female leadership in the fields of culture, health and raising awareness towards environment in four governorates: Cairo, Port Saied, Suez, and Fayoum.

In addition to motivating Egyptian female efficiencies to participate and communicate in Laky forum. Through shedding light on their success stories regionally and locally, and celebrating their achievements either inside or outside, as inspiring and effective stories that are to be followed to change the culture and mindset of women.

Commenting on the 17 initiatives implemented by UB, which benefit more than 29 thousand ladies, El Kady said that women empowerment has a great social and economic return, whether on corporate level or on the national econom6y level.

He added that motivating women to work and produce is to contribute to improving the innovative and creative abilities of the society. In addition, the continual development process of basic skills and crisis management also contribute to attracting more investments and improving the citizen’s life style.

He pointed out that the political leadership, Egyptian state, CBE, and community institutions have all taken motivating steps and procedures to maximize the participation of Egyptian women in many fields either economic, social, cultural, or health fields. In addition to removing the obstacles that are to hinder them getting their rights.

Ashraf El Kady affirmed that UB is dedicated to support national and international initiatives regarding women empowerment on social and economic levels, in order to accomplish equity, fill the gap among men and women, and apply equal opportunity principle, and achieve equality among men and women as per The UN principles.
